"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Luke 12:34
Women may find themselves going to the dentist more often this year according to a recent survey. Apparently we would rather sit in a dental chair facing the dreaded drill opposed to discussing finances with our spouse. That's not a good idea since financial problems are the single biggest reason for martial distress. Of course discussing money is not the most romantic thing to do this Valentine season, so what's a girl to do?
Grab a glass of wine, have a bit of chocolate, and follow these suggestions for true couple financial bliss.
1. Both of you need to be involved in the family finances. It is easy to delegate the job to one of you, but that is a mistake especially when faced with a sudden change. Protect yourself so you are never surprised or become a victim.
2. Schedule a financial "date". Have fun with it. Do this every month for just an hour. Have a theme/topic each month and stick to the subject. For example, financial goals can be your January topic. April can be about taxes. You can discuss insurance in July. By the end of the year, you should have a good grasp on your financial situation.
3. Keep a 3-ring binder for your meetings. Take notes and add pertinent documents you discuss. By the end of the year, you will have everything organized and all in one place.
4. For your first meeting, each person should bring a list of priorities and goals you want to accomplish. Also bring a description about how you were raised about money and share it with your partner. Have one person start while the other listens. Be kind and don't argue. One person should speak and the other should paraphrase what was said and then take turns.
Consider your marriage like a small business instead of just a romantic couple. In a true partnership, both members are aware of the day-to-day finances. Participating in this form of behavior will actually increase your romantic affairs. And that's a good thing since most of us would rather avoid frequent trips to the dentist! Happy Valentine's Day!
